The Gili Islands — three tiny coral-fringed islets off the northwest coast of Lombok — are famous for turquoise water, sea turtles, no motorised vehicles, and some of the best snorkeling in Southeast Asia. Many travellers assume you need to stay overnight. You don't.

A Gili Islands day trip from Bali by private boat is absolutely possible — and for groups of 15–40 people, a private charter is often the most comfortable and cost-effective way to do it.

How Far Are the Gili Islands from Bali?

The Gili Islands sit approximately 35 km northwest of Lombok, and about 70 km east of Bali across the Lombok Strait. By private charter yacht from Serangan Harbour in South Bali, the crossing takes approximately 1.5–2.5 hours depending on conditions and vessel speed.

The Lombok Strait can be choppy — especially during the wet season. The trip is most comfortable from May through October. We recommend checking conditions before departure and choosing an appropriately sized, stable vessel for the crossing.

Which Gili Island? Trawangan, Air, or Meno?

The three Gili Islands offer different experiences:

Gili Trawangan (Gili T)

The largest and most developed. Famous for nightlife, diving schools, beachside restaurants, and the largest selection of snorkeling sites. Best for social groups, divers, and those who want amenities.

Gili Air

A middle ground — more relaxed than Gili T but more developed than Meno. Good snorkeling just off the beach, calm lagoons, excellent for sea turtle sightings. Popular with couples and families.

Gili Meno

The smallest and most peaceful. Very few tourists. Beautiful snorkeling around the Meno Wall. Best for those seeking quiet and authenticity over convenience.

For a day trip from Bali: Gili Trawangan gives you the most options in a short time — good snorkeling, beach restaurants for lunch, and easy to explore on foot in a few hours.

What to Do at the Gili Islands in One Day

Snorkeling

The Gili Islands are surrounded by coral reefs with excellent sea turtle populations. Snorkeling sites around Gili Trawangan include:

Beach & Island Exploration

Gili Trawangan's main strip runs along the east coast: beachfront restaurants, warungs, smoothie bars, and local crafts. The island is tiny enough to circle by foot in 2 hours, or rent a bicycle for 30 minutes.

Diving

If any group members want to dive (vs. snorkel), PADI dive shops on Gili T offer fun dives from ~$40 USD. Non-divers can snorkel or relax on the beach while the divers go down.
